Checklist if You’re Planning to Move Into a New Apartment

As exciting as it is to be moving into a different building or apartment, you need to be organized so that the stress doesn’t get you down. Here’s a convenient checklist of things you need to do before making any major decisions regarding your move:

Research the Area

You’ve probably visited the area you’re planning on moving to, but beyond that you want to make sure it’s safe for residents. You can easily go online and research the neighborhood to find out about the level of crime in the area.

Once you’ve determined that the community is safe, you might want to research the amenities close by. If you enjoy going out at night, you will want to know which bars, restaurants, movie theaters and other types of nightlife are in close proximity. If you have a growing family or are planning on having kids, you should research child-friendly venues like parks and sports fields.

Furniture & Accessories

If this is your first apartment, you’re going to need furniture. Just take it room-by-room and make a running list.

For the master bedroom, you will need a bed, one or two nightstands and a dresser or chest of drawers, at the very least. And, don’t forget a comforter, blankets, sheets and pillows.

The living room is going to require seating, so you’ll need a sofa and/or sectional, a coffee table and perhaps one or two chairs.

Kitchens don’t require much in the way of furniture, but you will need pots and pans for cooking and dishes, bowls, glasses, mugs, and utensils. You may also want a coffee pot, toaster and blender.

Bathrooms don’t require furniture either, but you may want one or two bath mats or throw rugs, a shower curtain, towels and washcloths.

After you’ve taken care of the basic essentials mentioned above, anything else you get depends on how large the apartment you’re moving into is and your own personal needs. If your living room is large enough or you have a spare bedroom, you may want to set up a home office with a desk and chair. On the other hand, if you’re moving into a studio, you’ll need to make the most of your space. You might want to try a sofa bed with other pieces that offer built-in storage.

The Actual Move

Once the lease is signed and you’ve organized the furniture you’ll need, the next step is actually moving in. Your best bet is to use a reputable moving company to help you pack and transport your belongings.

Want to know why?

Hiring professional movers will save you a lot of time and energy. You won’t have the bother of renting a truck, the back strain of moving heavy furniture and lugging everything up stairs. Your belongings are far more likely to be damaged if you move everything yourself or with the help of friends.

Contact a reputable moving company in your area to schedule your move. Rather than worrying about how you’re going to pack and move large boxes and heavy items, you can just sit back and let the professionals take care of everything.
